What a way to see the Golden Gate Bridge!

Another fantastic bridge this week! Golden Gate Bridge is located in San Francisco, California and is a must see.

History and Architecture

This bridge was famous for being the world’s longest suspension bridge when it was constructed back in 1937. An impressive 80,000 miles of wire spans the structure, which anchors the bridge to the shore. The colour was a happy accident as the steels used to build it simply arrived in an orange primer for fire protection and this quickly became a staple characteristic of it. Considering the awful weather that workers endured whilst building the bridge, only 11 people died during it’s construction. Many more fell but were caught in safety nets.

Visiting the bridge

As you can see from my photos, the weather isn’t often forgiving for photos, as the fog comes rolling in with a drop in temperature. However, if you can catch it right, you can get some truly atmospheric images.

A great way to see it is from a boat! There are some great tours that leave from around Pier 39 that sail passed Alcatraz and right under the bridge. The bay itself is gorgeous too so I highly recommend this way to travel.

Another way to see it is by foot. You can walk the entire 1.2 miles or simply stop off at the view points either side of the bridge. Try a MUNI pass for public transport to get you there as they work on buses and cable cars! It’s great value for money and you can get multi-day passes. San Fran was one of my favourite cities so far but I’d love to know what you think!
